How to use this free QR code generator
Capy QR is a free online QR code generator: create a QR code for a link, Wi-Fi network, contact card or any of 12 types, design it with your colors and logo, and download it in print quality. Static QR codes need no signup and never expire. With a free account you can also make dynamic QR codes — change the link after printing and see how many people scanned.
How to make a QR code in 3 steps
- Pick a type and enter your content. Paste a link, or choose Wi-Fi, contact, WhatsApp and the other types and fill in the fields. The QR code updates as you type.
- Design it. Choose dot and corner styles, colors or a gradient, add your logo and a “Scan me” frame. When you add a logo, the generator sizes it, raises error correction and clears the dots behind it so the code still scans.
- Download and test. Export PNG or JPEG for screens, SVG or vector PDF for print, up to 3,200 pixels. Scan it with two different phones before you print in bulk.
QR code types you can create
Each type has its own page with tips, examples and the right settings preselected:
- Website (URL) QR code — opens any web page, menu, PDF link or form
- Wi-Fi QR code — joins your network without typing the password
- vCard contact QR code — saves your name, phone and email to contacts
- WhatsApp QR code — opens a chat with a pre-written message
- Email QR code — starts an email with the address and subject filled in
- SMS QR code — opens a text message ready to send
- Phone QR code — opens the dialer with your number
- Location QR code — opens a place in the maps app
- Social media QR code — opens your Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn or other profile
- Calendar event QR code — adds an event with time and place
- Payment QR code — opens PayPal, Venmo, Cash App or Revolut
- Plain text QR code — shows a message without opening anything
Popular presets build on these: a QR code generator with logo, colored and round QR codes, codes for Google Forms and Google reviews, a digital business card, and QR code stickers.
Static vs dynamic QR codes
A static QR code stores your content directly in the pattern. It works forever, needs no account and no internet service behind it — but it can't be edited or tracked. Static codes are generated right in your browser, so the details you type, like a Wi-Fi password, aren't sent to our servers.
A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect link instead. You can change where it points anytime, even after printing, and every scan is counted: scans per day, countries, cities and phone operating systems. Capy QR's free account includes 3 dynamic codes with 7 days of analytics, with no trial and no expiry; Starter and Pro add more codes, custom short domains and longer history. Dynamic codes are link codes — Wi-Fi and contact codes have to carry their data inside the code. More in the free dynamic QR code generator and static vs dynamic QR codes.
Design a QR code that still scans
Styled codes scan as well as plain ones if you keep a few rules: dark dots on a light background with strong contrast, a blank margin (quiet zone) around the code, and a size that fits the scanning distance — at least 2 cm (0.8 in) on a business card, much larger on a poster. Short links make simpler patterns. See QR code size for print and why a QR code won't scan, or browse QR code examples to scan and compare styles.
PNG, SVG or PDF?
Use PNG for websites, slides and email signatures, SVG for design tools like Canva, Figma or Illustrator, and PDF for print shops — Capy QR's PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at any size and keeps your full design. Details in PNG vs SVG vs PDF for QR codes.
Why choose Capy QR over other “free” QR code generators
Many “free” QR code generators are a trial in disguise. The code works for a week or a month, then stops scanning until you subscribe — by which point it is already printed on menus, flyers and packaging. Our guide to the hidden costs of free QR code generators lists the usual catches: watermarks, scan caps and paywalled downloads.
Capy QR works differently. Static codes never expire and carry no watermark. A free account includes 3 dynamic QR codes with scan analytics, 7 days of history and no cap on scans, and there is no surprise subscription that deactivates codes you already printed (more on QR code subscription traps). It is also free QR code software that runs in your browser: nothing to download or install. If you were looking for a simple qrcode generator that doesn't hold your codes hostage, this is it.
Make a QR code in Chrome or Google — and when to use a generator instead
Chrome can make a quick QR code by itself. On desktop, open the page, click the share icon in the address bar (or right-click the page) and choose “Create QR code”; on Android, tap Share and pick “QR code”. That is fine for a plain, one-off code for the page you are on. Google Lens can scan codes, but Google doesn't offer a styled QR code generator. Use Capy QR when you need more: colors, a logo and frames, other types such as Wi-Fi, contact or WhatsApp, SVG and PDF files for print, or a dynamic QR code with tracking you can edit after printing. For any web address, start with the URL QR code generator.
Is this QR code generator really free?
Yes. Static QR codes are free forever with no signup, no watermark and no limit on downloads or scans. Dynamic codes with analytics are free on an account, up to 3. Paid plans only raise those limits — they don't unlock basic features. To read a code instead of making one, see how to scan a QR code.
