How to make a QR code in Canva (free) — static vs dynamic, logos and expiry

Make a QR code in Canva step by step: the free Static QR Codes app, Canva's Dynamic QR codes, what each plan includes, whether Canva QR codes expire, and how to add a logo for free.

·6 min read

To make a QR code in Canva, open your design, select Apps, search “QR code” and choose Static QR Codes. Paste your link, optionally change the colors and margin, and select Save — the code drops onto your design. That's free on every plan. Canva also has Dynamic QR codes you can edit after printing, but scan analytics, your own logo and expiry dates need a Canva Business plan. Here are both methods, what each plan gets, and the free way to get a logo and tracking into a Canva design.

The steps and plan details below come from Canva's own help center as of October 2026. Canva updates its tools often, so menu names may shift slightly.

How to make a QR code in Canva (step by step)

  1. Open the design you want the QR code in (or create a new one).
  2. In the left panel, select Apps and search “QR code”.
  3. Choose Static QR Codes from the results.
  4. Paste the web address into the URL field. A short link scans more reliably than a long one.
  5. Optional: under the customize options, change the foreground color, background color and margin.
  6. Select Save. The code appears on your design — move and resize it like any other element, then scan it with your phone before you download or print.

You can also start from the Elements tab: search “QR code” and pick Create static or Create dynamic from the banner that appears.

How to make a dynamic QR code in Canva

  1. Search “QR code” in Apps (or Elements) and choose Dynamic QR codes.
  2. Pick a pattern, paste your URL into the URL field, and optionally name the code.
  3. Select Save. To change the link later, select the code, choose Edit, update the URL and save — printed copies follow the new link.

Dynamic codes work on every Canva plan, but on Free and Pro they include a Canva logo, and Insights (scan counts, locations, devices), custom logos, expiry dates and collaborator editing need Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit. Canva also can't turn a static code into a dynamic one later, so decide before you print.

In short: static is free and plain — fine for a link that never changes. Anything you'd want on a printed code that lasts — an editable link, scan stats, your own logo — puts you on Canva's Business tier.

Do Canva QR codes expire?

Not on their own. Canva lets Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit users set an expiry date on dynamic codes, with an optional page to send late scanners to; without one, the code doesn't expire. Two things can still break it: a static code stops working if the page it points to disappears, and a dynamic code stops if it's deleted, since every scan passes through Canva's redirect. How to add a logo to a Canva QR code

Canva's static codes can't carry a logo at all, and its dynamic codes show Canva's logo on the Free and Pro plans — uploading your own needs Business. The free route is to make the code outside Canva and bring it in:

  1. Make the code in the QR code generator with logo: paste your link, upload your logo, and match the colors to your brand. Capy QR raises error correction automatically so the code still scans.
  2. Want to change the link later or count scans? Make it a dynamic QR code — free with an account, including 3 codes with 7 days of scan analytics.
  3. Download it as SVG — it stays sharp at any print size.
  4. In Canva, open Uploads, upload the SVG and drag it into your design.

Tips to keep a Canva QR code scannable

If a code won't read, the usual causes are in why your QR code won't scan.

Canva or a dedicated QR code generator?

If the QR code is a small piece of a poster you're already building in Canva and the link will never change, Canva's free static code is perfectly fine. If you want your own logo, an editable link and scan counts without a Business plan, make the code in a dedicated generator and drop it into Canva. A side-by-side breakdown is in Capy QR vs Canva.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a QR code in Canva for free?
Yes. Canva's Static QR Codes tool is free on every plan: open Apps, search “QR code”, choose Static QR Codes, paste your link and select Save. Canva's Dynamic QR codes also work on the free plan, but they carry a Canva logo and have no scan analytics unless you're on Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit.
Do Canva QR codes expire?
No — not unless you set an expiry date, which is only possible on dynamic codes with a Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit plan. A static code works for as long as the page it points to exists. A dynamic code keeps working as long as it isn't deleted or expired, because scans go through Canva's redirect.
Can I change the link of a Canva QR code after printing?
Only with a dynamic code: select it, choose Edit, update the URL and save — no reprint needed. Static codes can't be edited, and Canva can't convert a static code into a dynamic one, so you'd need a new code and a reprint.
Can I see how many people scanned my Canva QR code?
Canva's Insights (total and unique scans, locations, device types) is available for dynamic codes on Canva Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit. Free and Pro users see an upgrade prompt. If you need free scan tracking, a free Capy QR account includes 3 dynamic codes with 7 days of analytics.
How do I add a logo to a QR code in Canva?
Static codes can't have a logo. Dynamic codes can show your own logo only on Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit — on Free and Pro they show Canva's logo instead. The free workaround: make the code with your logo in a QR generator, download the SVG, and upload it into your Canva design.
How do I put a QR code I already have into Canva?
Download it as SVG (or a large PNG), then in the Canva editor open Uploads, upload the file and drag it into your design. Resize from a corner so it stays square, and leave blank space around it.

Bottom line: Apps → “QR code” → Static QR Codes → paste link → Save gets you a free QR code in Canva in under a minute. For a logo, an editable link or scan tracking without upgrading, make the code with the free QR code generator and upload it to Canva.
